The Dream-Maiden

Subbu ·

Where flocks of bright peacocks come to play,a drizzle of sweet rain — the maiden’s hair;what Kamban and Kannadasan would see and set to verse,a grove of golden chariots — her form.

Where noble Tamil words stand and sing, the Sangam of southern Madurai — her speech;stepping slowly down a road of blue,a sandal-paste of the silver moon — her eyes.

Beauty brimming like honey, the shadow of all I longed for —I saw it, for some sin I had done;the life held in this flesh turned toward the deer, and I stood there, forgetting the word “I”.

Why did the bubble the water hid rise to the top?She too vanished, just like that. Why did my eyelids, opening, fill with sorrow? She dissolved, along with the dream!
